Site Plan

An urban surface...

that explores the busy public streetscape post automobiles through a shift of environment. While embracing the changes of time and seasons, a new opportunity arises to assemble a dynamic landscape that includes public space, the flow of water and the flow of people.

Site Plan

This site is an example of a high density office concentrated area. A vast variety of travellers often pass through all large and small vessels. The organization of this site plan allows pedestrians to flow through for different circumstances throughout the day as well as through the shift of seasons. The plan not only incorporates the flow of pedestrians but also reintroducing the flow of water into this car free zone.

Zone 1

Zone 1

This zone takes place in a courtyard that is connected by two smaller lane ways that used to be under-utilized. Bringing pedestrians into this area would increase the flow through less dense pockets of the city. Since it is often shady here, it would create a great opportunity for a public space for dwelling.

In the summer, additional shade would be provided by the trees as well as the artificial canopies by the open field. In the winter, users will rely on the artificial canopies for shelter and protection.

In the middle of this intersection, the flow of water has been brought back into our city centre. This is not only a feature point that would bring people out but also used as a structure to distribute and control flow of pedestrians.

In the summer, the frame work will remain as an installation that hovers over the water.

In the winter, as snow gets piled onto the frame work, various sizes of "icebergs" will emerge. As the season progresses, tunnels and seating can be dug out from the structures.

Zone 2

Water has been an element that is significant to a port city like Toronto, but with the rapid increase of population, we have found ourselves more and more distant from this natural element. By reintroducing these collections of water that lead its way back to the lake, will not only remind our users of this connection but also serve as an interaction with nature.

Zone 2

Zone 3

This zone is the most exposed to weathering and in an area where it is embraced. With added topography and landscaping, this zone would be used for circulation and more casual and short term dwelling, as opposed to Zone 1. The topography turns into steps that integrate a suggestion for performances and interactions with the site.

In the summer, the trees naturally provide shade and privacy in certain areas. In the winter, the large fields can be used for snow activities and general dwellings.
